Lightweight PV, roof-specific mounting and coordinated storage

An integrated approach for large-span, low-load roofs

Assess the roof before defining the system

Coal and material sheds often have long spans, curved roofs and limited spare load capacity. First review structural capacity, roof condition and profile, drainage and operating environment; then define the module layout, mounting method and maintenance routes.

Select fixing for the roof profile

Clamps may be assessed for standing-seam, angle-seam and low-seam metal roofs. Trapezoidal steel sheets may be assessed for combined adhesive and mechanical fixing. Fixing points, adhesive quantity and installation details must follow site pull-out tests, product requirements and engineering review; one detail should not be applied to every roof.

Plan from rooftop generation to site energy use

Grid-connected PV, or PV with storage, monitoring and energy management, can be considered against production shifts, the daily load profile and grid conditions. PV capacity, storage capacity and controls are determined from project data.

Common roof mounting approaches

Select the mounting approach according to roof profile, structure and site testing.

Standing-seam metal roofs

Use compatible clamps; verify seam type, clamp positions, waterproofing and drainage.

Angle-seam or low-seam roofs

Select clamps for the exact sheet profile and confirm compatibility with the roof seam.

Trapezoidal steel sheets

Assess adhesive plus mechanical fixing. Bonding areas and fixing details require site pull-out tests and technical approval.

Maintenance and safety access

Plan service routes around the PV array, roof ridge and perimeter, with safe access between roof and ground.

Five areas of project safety

Materials and load

Check module, mounting and total added load against the roof structure.

Fire and heat management

Review materials, equipment layout, ventilation and fire requirements under applicable project rules.

Structural and mechanical

Confirm clamps, bonded joints, wind resistance and mechanical fixing for site conditions.

Electrical

Apply the system design for strings, cables, protection, grounding and grid connection.

Operations and maintenance

Plan service routes, roof access and safe conditions for future maintenance.

Grid-connected PV and PV with storage

The presentation lists the following configurations for a single coal-shed example as a starting point for discussion.

Grid-connected reference

800 kW PV, intended to serve daytime production demand. Final configuration depends on grid capacity and load data.

PV-plus-storage reference

800 kW PV + 832 kWh storage, illustrating a coordinated PV and storage peak-management configuration.

These are illustrative configurations from the presentation, not a design or quotation for a specific project. Its economic calculations use China-specific tariff and operating assumptions and do not represent Malaysian project returns. Recalculate against local tariffs, demand, taxes, grid rules and equipment costs.
